General information: 1983 Commemorative Issues
This 5-pound note commemorates the 150th anniversary of English rule of the Falkland Islands. Neighboring Argentina has always claimed sovereignty of the islands, and on 2 April 1982, its invasion of the islands precipitated an undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. After two months, the Argentine forces were defeated and withdrew, although Argentina continues to lay claim to the islands to this day.
