Shortly after the communist Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan took power during the Saur Revolution, civil war broke out. To ensure that the communists maintained control of the country, Soviet forces invaded, assassinated Hafzullah Amin on 27 December 1979, and installed Babrak Karmal as head of state. Karmal remained in power until replaced by Mohammad Najibullah in 1986. The following year, the country changed its name to the Republic of Afghanistan. - On these notes, the coat of arms is replaced by Da Afghanistan Banks seal, which includes the year of the banks establishment. The seal depicts the back of a Tetradrachm coin from the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom minted circa 171-145 BC, with Greek text transcribed as VASILEOS MEGALOU EUKRATIDOU (Great King of Eucratides).
