These notes were issued in response to Eritreas replacing the birr with the nakfa. These notes are like the preceding issues, but feature new color schemes, symbols have been added at front right, and the three larger denominations have been reduced in size. Instead of bearing the Amharic law date, all notes now include the year of issue in the Ethiopian and Gregorian calendars (left- and right-hand dates, respectively), both expressed in Western numerals. Furthermore, the coat of arms has been removed from the back of the notes, and the map remains on front, albeit in simplified form. The vignettes on the front of the 50- and 100-birr notes have been changed.
Prefixes and serial numbers appear twice on the front of all notes: at upper left and lower right. On the 1- and 5-birr notes, the same sans serif font is used in both locations. On the other denominations, a serif font is used at upper left, whereas a sans serif font is used at lower right. As with the preceding issues, changes to the fonts used for the prefixes and serial numbers on these notes suggest several different printers were responsible for producing notes during this period, but their identities remain unknown.
