After the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumahs Convention Peoples Party government, the military government removed Nkrumahs portrait from the banknotes and re valued the currency. On the new notes, the currency name remained “cedi,” but the new currency was called the “new cedi” (N¢), which on 17 February 1967 replaced the “old cedi” at a rate of ¢1.20=N¢1. The N¢ notes remained in circulation until March 1973 when the currency unit became simply known as the cedi.
