General information: 1978 Issues
With the exception of the 100-won denomination, the following notes were issued over the years in five different varieties with different color serial numbers on front and overprints on back to distinguish between their intended use. Notes with no overprint and red and black serial numbers were issued by the central bank for general circulation. In 1979, the Bank of Trade issued notes with green seals and black serial numbers to be used as foreign exchange certifcates (FECs) by socialist visitors buying from locals, but notes with blue guilloches and black serial numbers were to be used when buying from foreigners. Conversely, when capitalist visitors bought from locals, notes with red seals and red serial numbers were used, but notes with red guilloches and red serial numbers were used when buying from fellow foreigners.
