The won became the currency of North Korea on 6 December 1947, replacing the Soviet won and Korean yen that were still in circulation. Te notes without watermarks were printed on white
paper many years after the watermarked notes on buﬀ paper, reportedly by corrupt ofcials who attempted to sell them to neighboring countries.
