During their invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Iraqi forces looted substantial amounts of banknotes from the Central Bank of Kuwait and the Iraqi occupation authority placed the Kuwaiti dinar on a
par with the Iraqi dinar in August 1990. Following liberation, the CBK restored the Kuwaiti dinar on 24 March 1991, and required all old banknotes be exchanged for new ones. It refused to reimburse the stolen banknotes, which can be identified by their serial number denominators.
