The tolar was introduced on 8 October 1991. It replaced the 1990 convertible version of the Yugoslav dinar at par. Curiously, these notes do not bear a unit of currency, but rather, simply
numerical denominations. The first banknotes were provisional payment notes all featuring Triglav, the tallest mountain in Slovenia on the front and the Duke Stone (Knežji kamen) and a Carniolan honey bee, on the back. As a general rule, the first two digits of the serial number represent the last two digits of the year of printing.
However, there are a handful of notes of each variety with the wrong date caused by the serial number rolling over to the subsequent “year.” All of the notes were printed by Cetis Celje in Slovenia without imprint.
