5 Shillings - 1986 - P31b - B306b - UncThe Everyday Currency of Pre-War Somalia While the high denominations get the attention, the 5 Shillings note tells the story of daily life in 1980s Mogadishu. Issued in 1986 by De La Rue, this compact banknote served as the backbone of commerce during the final years of the Siad Barre regime. Unlike the propaganda-heavy higher values, this note focuses on INSERT THEME, e.g., agriculture/rural life , reflecting the agrarian roots of the nation. Surviving in Uncirculated condition is increasingly difficult, as most examples were spent, folded, and lost during the chaos that followed 1991. A genuine survivor of a vanished economy.

100 shillings - 1988 - P35c - B310e - UncRifles and Heroes: The 1988 Somalia 100 Shillings - Issued during the twilight years of Siad Barre's rule, this banknote is a masterpiece of propaganda and art. The front features a woman holding a rifle in one hand and a hoe in the other the ultimate symbol of the nation's military-agricultural ideology. - But look closer at the paper: hidden within is the watermark of Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, the legendary warrior who fought the British decades earlier. It connects the modern revolutionary state to its anti-colonial roots. - With the collapse of the Somali government in 1991, much of this currency was lost or destroyed. Today, finding a crisp, Uncirculated example like this offers a tangible link to a vanished era.
