On 12 November 1999, Law No. 12/99 created the kwanza, replacing the kwanza reajustado at a rate of 1,000,000 to 1. Unlike the first kwanza, this currency is subdivided into 100 cêntimos.
The new notes didn't enter circulation until 13 December 1999.
