More information about: Thailand,
Officially the Kingdom of Thailand, is a kingdom in Southeast Asia. The capital of Thailand is Bangkok. Until 1939 the country was called Siam. The Thai name of the country is "Prathet Thai", where Prathet means land and the word Thai is interpreted as free. In that case, Thailand would literally mean "free country". However, the spelling of the Thai word thai with this meaning in Thai script differs slightly although the pronunciation of both words is identical. The name Thailand originally also had a political meaning in connection with claims to land, especially in Laos, where ethnic Thais live.
Thailand is bordered to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the west by Myanmar and the Andaman Sea, to the extreme south by Malaysia and to the southeast by the Gulf of Thailand, part of the South China Sea.
